Hundreds Streak for Saint Vincent Clinic
Leavenworth, Kansas – January 25th, 300 community members, many in costume, raised over $34,000 for uninsured patients of Saint Vincent Clinic at the first Snowflake Streak, which had been billed as “a one-mile walk on the coldest day of the year.” Emcee Len Jennings of KMBC noted, “We missed the coldest day of the year, but I think everyone here appreciates that.”
Among the 26 teams participating, organizers recognize four for their exemplary effort. Team Citizens from Citizens Savings and Loan was named “Top Team” for raising $3,940. The Cushing Caped Crusaders, of St. Luke’s Cushing Hospital won “Biggest Team” with 34 participants registered. “Most Fun Team” was awarded to St. John Hospital’s team who, proudly dressed in sparkling handcrafted snowflake costumes, endured several rounds of Zumba with the Sisters of Charity during the event warm-up.
After the event, organizers noted that The Plastered Penguins, a team from Ten Penny Restaurant and Bar, was a top contender for all three prizes, spurring Executive Director Amy Falk to say, “The Plastered Penguins were an amazing, energetic and hard-working team, and they deserve recognition.”
Each team was encouraged to raise at least $750, the average cost for a full year of medical care for one patient at Saint Vincent Clinic. Demonstrating both compassion and a competitive spirit, many teams well exceeded that amount.
